Chengdu Christian Museum Officially Opens, Exhibiting Local Christian History and Social Contributions

Chengdu Museum of Christianity, initiated by Chengdu TSPM, officially opened on Dec. 20, 2016.

Located in the former bishop's house, the museum exhibits the Christian culture, the history of Christianity preached into China until Chengdu, the mainstream denominations and missionaries in Chengdu. It also exhibits the Christianity's social contribution to Chengdu, covering education, medicine, literature and charity, carried out by local churches since the starting of Three-Self Patriotic Movement.

Since Robert Morrison coming to China in 1807, the Protestant missionaries have preached the gospel, translated the Bible and ordained pastors. In 1868, Christianity was introduced to Chengdu, Sichuan and the first church was officially founded in 1881. The 148-year history experienced exploration & establishment in the late Qing Dynasty and early period of Republic of China, reformation of Three-Self Patriotic Movement after the founding of New China, and restoration & development since the reform and opening up.

The construction program of the exhibition took more than one year to complete, costing about 800,000 yuan. It collects more than 120 objects and 500 photos and a lot of data is still being gathered.

In the opening ceremony, Rev. Zhang Xiansheng, chairman of the city's TSPM, and the secretary Hu Yali awarded the donation certification and distributed thank-you letters to those who offered materials, practices and assistance to the museum. Two senior officials unveiled the nameplate.
