On Tuesday, the first ever IMAX 3D panda documentary film "Return to Nature" has started filming in Southwest China's Sichuan province.

The documentary features the conservation, breeding and rehabilitation of giant pandas in a breeding base in Chengdu and a research center in Dujiangyan city.

The director of the film is Drew Fellman and it is expected that the filming will take nine months to complete. The film is also supported by Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Canadian-based IMAX Corporation, and the US non-profit group Global Cause Foundation; which is funding the film.

According to the officials of the Chengdu research base, they hope the documentary can help promote the protection of giant pandas as well as showcase Chengdu's image as an international tourist destination featuring pandas.

The Global Cause Foundation has been working alongside the Chengdu base for many years and has assisted in several research projects to release pandas in the wild.

The panda documentary project was signed in October 2015 by the IMAX Corporation and the Chengdu research base.
