A Singaporean contestant has been given a chance to shine on Sing! China.

An 18-year-old woman named Curley Gao chose Chinese singer Na Ying as her mentor over Mandopop superstar Jay Chou and Hong Kong singer Eason Chan.

On the episode of the talent show which was aired on Friday, July 28, Jay Chou praised the contestant and compared her vocals to the acclaimed and most popular Singaporean singer-songwriter, Tanya Chua.

"People have said that I sound like Tanya Chua. I am always singing her songs. To hear it come from Jay Chou, it kind of confirms what people have been saying," Gao said in reply to Chou's compliments.

The Chinese national, who has been studying in Singapore since she was nine and a Dunman High student, is the second Singapore representative to make this season. To recall, Joanna Dong, who came from the same country, made it to Jay Chou's team during the first episode of the show.

"My mum is a huge fan of Na Ying. I grew up listening to her classics such as Conquer. Her singing is so powerful, I want to learn how to have a stable tone like her," she answered when she was asked why she chose Na Ying instead of the other mentors.

"In Xinjiang culture, everyone loves to sing and dance. I've been surrounded by music since I was born. When I was tiny, I hummed the melody of songs," Gao said about her passion for music.

Sing! China airs every Friday at 9:10 p.m. on Jia Le Channel.
