On Tuesday, the Catalan government remains steadfast with their decision and announced that it would not bow to the Spanish government's desire for Catalonia to renounce its independence.

The Spanish government threatened the region by stressing it will remove its autonomy unless it abandons its independence by Thursday. However, Catalonia rejected the deadline and stressed - through the statement by Catalonia government spokesman Jordi Turull - "Giving in forms no part of this government's scenarios. On Thursday, we won't give anything different than what we gave on Monday."

The scenario between Catalonia and Spain further worsens after Madrid's High Court ordered on Monday the jailing of two of Catalonia's two main separatist group leaders while investigations regarding their involvement in sedition is being done. According to the Catalan government, Madrid is using these leaders as "political prisoners" and one of the groups have called for peaceful demonstrations in Catalonia on Tuesday to argue against Madrid's action.

Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont commented on the detentions in a tweet, saying "Sadly, we have political prisoners again."

Spanish Justice Minister Rafael Catala fired back on Catalonia's comment and said that the jailing of the leaders of both the Catalan National Assembly and Omnium was a judicial decision. He even said "We can talk of politicians in prison but not politicial prisoners. These are not political prisoners because yesterday's prison ruling was due to a (suspected) crime."
