Chinese Box Office Records for 2017 May Reach $8.6 Billion

The Chinese movie box office has done very well last year according to the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television as they report that the revenue rose up to 13.45% in 2017, amounting to more than 55.9 billion yuan. The agency also stated that 53.84% of these revenue came from the domestic films released during the year.

The movie 'Wolf Warrior II' topped the list and became the country's highest grossing film ever and easily bagged 5.68 billion yuan in ticket sales alone. Movies such as 'Never Say Die', 'Kung Fu Yoga', 'Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back' and 'Youth' had assisted the domestic film industry to flourish.

Out of the foreign films that were shown in China in 2017, 'The Fate of the Furious' was the top-grossing foreign film, ranking secon dafter 'Wolf Warrior II.' The other films that also gotten support from the Chinese market include 'Transformers: The Last Knight', 'Dangal', 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' and 'Kong: Skull Island.'

The documentary film 'Twenty Two', which featured the stories of 22 comfort women made history last year as the first Chinese documentary film to reach 100 million yuan revenue in the box office.
