On December 24, 2018, the State Administration of Religious Affairs released a Christmas congratulation letter to the Catholic and Protestant communities in China on its official website.

The letter reads, "With the advent of Christmas, we wish to convey our cordial greetings and best wishes to you. In the year that has passed, Catholic and Protestant clergy personnel and believers have learned and acted on Xi Jinping's "Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for A New Era" and the guiding principles from the 19th National Congress; adhered to the principle of independence and self-management and of developing religion in the Chinese context; and promoted the construction of theological thought. They have carried out religious activities within the bounds of the law, enhanced self-management levels, maintained harmony and stability in the Catholic and Protestant communities as well as have had a positive effect in promoting economic and social development."
