On Wednesday, Pope Francis called for both leaders of the two Koreas to have a "transparent dialogue" at the first inter-Korean summit and act with courage to foster both regional peace in the Peninsula and world peace.

In his general audience with the public at St. Peter's Square, the pope said "This encounter can be a propitious occasion to start a transparent dialogue and a concrete path to reconciliation and renewed fraternity aimed at guaranteeing peace on the Korean peninsula and in the whole world."

Pope Francis has visited South Korea in 2014 and had also called for both leaders to have "the courage of hope, thus becoming artisans of peace."

Both South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un are scheduled to meet at the border village of Panmunjom on Friday to begin the first inter-Korean summit after it was last held in 2007.
