Ash Wednesday, which falls on March 1 this year, marks the beginning of the Lent 2017 lasting 6 weeks up to Easter Sunday. Urumqi Church starts the season with a devotional on David's psalm of repentance (Psalm 51).

The church urges the congregation to spend some quiet time with God, read and meditate on God's word during the Lent. It also offers some devotional suggestions, such as singing a short hymn before reading the Bible and sharing a part of daily devotionals that touches you to others.

The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events of the Bible when Jesus is crucified on Good Friday, which then culminates in the celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
