China's darling of the crowd and Japan's table tennis player star, Ai Fukuhara announced on Wednesday her marriage to fellow table tennis player, Chiang Hung Chieh.

According to Nikkansports, the popular Japanese athlete and Taiwanese table tennis player applied for a marriage license in Tokyo.

Recalling the romantic moment, Chiang, who also competed in Rio, said: "I proposed to her after the Rio Olympics when I got a chance."

"I actually gave her a key and hoped that she would be an owner of our home," Chiang revealed how he proposed.

Fukuhara said she was overwhelmed during the proposal and forgot what she told him in response.

The 27-year-old famous Japanese table tennis player vowed to continue her career after her marriage.

"Most female athletes in Japan give up their career after marriage. But Chiang's support makes me feel that I can continue my career even after our marriage," she said, hoping she could be an example to Japan's younger generations with athletic careers.

Chinese followers of Fukuhara wished her best with their messages on her official Weibo account.

"Ai Fukuhara will get married!" one Weibo user says: "The couple has already gone through rain and wind, and in the end they'll stay together. I congratulate you. And as China's most favorite athlete, you've made a deep impression on us. It's not just your cute smile, it's also your athletic strength and your north-eastern accent that make us love you. We wish you the best."
