For all the sacrifices that our mothers did for us, it is only worthy to have a day where we celebrate them.

Despite popular belief, Mother's Day is not just a silly Hallmark-produced holiday. Here are the things you should know about it.

Mother's Day as an official holiday in 1914

Anna Jarvis is the one who organized the first celebration of Mother's Day in Philadelphia and West Virginia in 1908. After six years, she succeeded in making it an official holiday to honor mothers around the country.

According to the National Retail Federation, there are 69 percent of people planning to buy flowers for Mother's Day 2018 celebration. Most people from United States use carnation as a Mother's Day flower. Red carnations are known to represent admiration while pink carnations are known to represent love and gratitude. White carnations are also offered in remembrance of a mother who is no longer living.

Money Spent

Data from Oracle says that people are expected to spend $23.1 billion on Mother's Day. It is also the top 3 gift holidays of the year, behind Christmas and Valentine's Day.

Countries celebrating

Over 117 countries around the world celebrate Mother's Day during May. 21 countries celebrate in on March 8 along with International Women's Day.
