In this world, when it comes to decision making, love and other things, we make use of our brains. We think in advance of what will happen if we choose things over other things. But what does the Bible say?
Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
When Solomon expressed the Bible verse about guarding the heart, he means the inner core of the person, the feelings, desires, will, choices and thoughts that make the person who she/he is.
We often use our head; our brain and heart, as we think and we feel emotions. But according to the scripture, the heart is the center of our personal being. The Bible also says that thoughts often dictate who we truly become (Proverbs 23:7; 27:19) and that the mind reflects who he really is, not simply his words or actions. That is why God examines man's heart, not just his outward appearance and what he looks like (1 Samuel 16:7).
In order to decide, love and do things in life, it is important to guard our hearts and follow what it beats. Hardening the hearts occurs when we are presented with the truth of God, and we refuse to accept and acknowledge it.
In order to live a life of goodness, we must avoid temptation, anger and pride to guard the heart. Paul instructed us that "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things"( Philippians4:8). Dwelling more of these things will build fences around our hearts. Moreover, when we use our brains, Paul told us to take every thoughts to conform to God's will.
