A new report released on Thursday reveals that carbon dioxide emissions worldwide have increased to an all-time high this year.

The report from the Australian-based Global Carbon Project (GCP) revealed that CO2 emissions were on track to rise 2.7% to 37.1 billion tons this year. The data marks the second consecutive year that carbon emissions have increased dramatically after a plateau was recorded in 2014 and 2016.

The report said that the leading causes of the emission levels are the increase in cars worldwide and the rise in coal use.

In an interview with Fairfax Media on Thursday, GCP's executive director Pep Canadell said "It is disappointing to see global fossil fuel CO2 emissions going back to the strong growth rates of the past."

"The strong global CO2 emissions of 2018 are also very likely to continue into 2019 given the projections of a relative strong economy for that year."

The report also confirms that while current data shows the world heading to a catastrophic global warming, emission trends can still be reversed by 2020.
