Pope Francis reportedly gave 300 homeless people and refugees a sandwich and a drink to thank them for helping in handling out pamphlets during an epiphany feast day service on Friday, a report said.

The picnic by the pontiff is the latest charity gesture he showed to the needy. He was known to be close to the poor as this was his central cause during his papacy.

Pope Francis spoke to people during the Epiphany celebration. He handed out about 35, 000 pamphlets to the faithful who are in St. Peter's Square during the feast.

"I thought I would give you a little gift too. The camels are missing but I will give you the gift," he said. "I wish you a year of justice, forgiveness, serenity, but above all mercy. Reading this book will help - it fits in your pocket!"

To recall, Pope Francis ordered showers for the homeless to be set up just off St. Peter;s Square and treated Neapolitan pizza to 1,500 people after Mother Teresa's canonization.
