Chinese researchers have drilled a hole 1500 meters deep into the seabed of the South China Sea. The said hole has been tagged as the seventh deepest all over the world.

After the experts have drilled deep into the seabed, sediment rocks were found. In order to protect the hole, the researchers have installed 842 meters of casing.

For now, the researchers have gathered several rock samples which will help them answer some history about the South China Sea.

Huang Xiaolong from the Chinese Academy of Sciences Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry stated that the rock sampled they have collected were showing obvious pillow structure which are usually the structure of rocks formed from lava overflowing underwater.

The researcher also added that most of the samples are confirmed to be mid-ocean ridge basalts and thus, it will help them understand more the basin expansion of South China Sea.
