The fire at Grenfell Tower on the Lancaster West Estate was reported at 00:54 BST Thursday and about 200 firefighters are still tackling the blaze and reports of people still trapped inside their homes coming from those who escaped from the inferno.

The 24-storey Grenfell Tower on the Lancaster West Estate, North Kensington, was rushed by Forty fire shortly after 1:15 a.m.

The Police said that a number of people are being treated for a range of injuries they got from the fire, including two for smoke inhalation. There were also reports saying that there are still tenants trapped in the burning building.

"People screaming for help" that was the report of an eye-witness, as the fire took hold of the building, which contains 120 homes.

To escape from the tower block, some residents even use bedsheets just to save their lives.

However, those who are still inside were urged not to panic and to cover their mouths with wet towels as they made their escape.

Stuart Crighton, London Ambulance Service assistant director of operations, said: "We have sent a number of resources to the scene including our hazardous area response team and over 20 ambulance crews. "Our priority (is) to get people to safety and ensure they receive the medical help as quickly as possible.

"Our initial priority is to assess the level and nature of injuries and ensure those in the most need are treated first and taken to hospital."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted: "Major incident declared at Grenfell Tower in Kensington" and urged people to follow London Fire Brigade on Twitter.

Actor and writer Tim Downie, who lives around 600 meters away from the scene in Latimer Road, and said that he feared the block could collapse.

He said in a statement: "It's horrendous. The whole building is engulfed in flames. It's gone. It's just a matter of time before this building collapses."
