The shortest verse in the Holy Bible is John 11:35, "Jesus wept." But for all it's grammatical meaning, it is full of deep complexity and meaning.
According to the Bible, Jesus wept after he spoke with Lazarus' grieving sisters, Mary and Martha and after seeing all the mourners. This event seemed to be natural as most of us could have wept during that situation, too.
Why did Jesus weep?
Jesus simply had a deep compassion.
He felt the compassion when he saw those people suffering after Lazarus died. Jesus is sympathetic as you can see on Hebrews 4:15. We can read that Jesus and God feel over the affliction and grief experiences by people.
Another reason is because of the calamity of sin.
God offered his Son, Jesus to destroy evil as cited on 1 John 3:8. Jesus wept because it were tears of anger and longing. Jesus was about to deliver death its deathblow and ever since Adam and Eve's fall, Jesus endured sin's horrific destruction.
The next reason could be the cost he was about to pay about resurrecting Lazarus; it's his everlasting life.
Everyone might be happy after Lazarus resurrected from the dead. Everyone was rejoicing but they did not know that a glorious and memorable event will soon happen after. It was written on Luke 12:50 that after Lazarus' resurrection, Jesus' death on the cross is just days away. And Jesus wept because he knew that he would be paying for a price.
All these reasons and more but God and Jesus felt very compassionate about us.
It can be read on Psalm 103:13 how we feel the love of God through Jesus.
"As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him."
