Fans of the hit Japanese mystery manga 'Detective Conan' will not be getting any new manga chapters in the next coming weeks as its author, Gosho Aoyama, announced he will be taking a short break to recover from an illness.

The announcement released on Wednesday in the latest issue of Weekly Shonen Sunday included the author's statement, which says : "(Detective Conan) will be on hiatus for the foreseeable future so that I can recover from illness and rest up. I'll be taking a break for a while, but please keep an eye out for my return."

The series began in 1994 and centers in the story of a talented high school detective who got shrunk into a young boy after being forced to ingest an experimental toxin. In order to find a cure for his predicament, he used the alias Conan Edogawa and continues to solve mysteries while trying to keep his identity hidden.

The series is quite popular not just in Japan but also worldwide, translated into two dozen languages, including Chinese under the title "Case Closed."

The series has been adapted into an animated series in 1996, feature films, video games and even a live action series. As of April 2017, the manga has sold over 200 million books worldwide and the 1008th chapter was released.

It is still uncertain as to when the series will be continued.
