Joy in Sorrow

Just like the classical song composed by Fritz Kreisler "Liebesleid" also known as Love's Sorrow, there are numerous explanations about the song, and to be clear there are two versions of the song with the other one being "Liebesfreud", also known as Love's Joy.

But how does this romantic song of love and sorrow relate to our life today?

As the verse in Psalm 13:1 says (v1) "How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? "

(v2) "How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?"

This verse talks about a time in David's life when he experienced deep sorrow. And as the verse says, "how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?", asking God for answers is a very human thing to do.

In our life, we may experience a lot of difficulties, trials and heartaches.  Those can even make us or break us, but we must remember that everything happens for a reason.

Just like Liebesleid, some people find it more beautiful than its positive sibling, Liebesfreud.  So how do we find joy in sorrow?

1.        Seek God

Call it cliché, but who else do we turn too when we need someone to fix us up?  God is always there to guide us even in our darkest of nights.

2.        Half-glass full attitude

It may be annoying to some, but being optimistic has its perks.  If we continue to look at what's lacking, we are not going to be happy.  We will just end up being miserable and always regretting on what "could have" rather on what is in the moment.  As children of God, He wants us to live one day at a time.  We should not be stressing ourselves too much.  Everything will playout its part eventually, all we have to do is to allow God to do everything.

3.        Read His word

How else do we stay positive in times of sadness?  Of course, by reading the Bible, we will learn what God wants to do in our life.  His words are pure and true.  When in doubt, always seek God first.

In conclusion:

Psalms 13:1 (v6) says, "I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me."

In our time of sorrow, let us allow God to be the composer of our life's music.  Some songs are meant to be sad but sometimes people find solace in them.  Out problems are big but our God is bigger, so fear not! For our Lord God is at hand.

He will never leave you nor forsake you.
