Thalassemia Project of Guangzhou YMCA Listed into Ten Top Influential Philanthropy Projects of Guangzhou

On September 5,  "Guangzhou Philanthropy List" was published and "Thalassemia Relief Project" offered by Guangzhou YMCA was included among ten top influential philanthropy projects for the year.

Initiated in 2008, the project to provide assistance to Thalassemia was co-founded by Guangzhou YMCA and the Thalassemia Association of Guangdong Province. 

It carries out constant propaganda for the regional disease prevention, set up the establishment of a mutual support system for families suffering from the disease and promotes premarital and pregnancy check-ups. Since they started, the project has served over 700 families with the patients with exceeding 30000 volunteers' participation in the past eight years.

According to Wikipedia, Thalassemias are inherited blood disorders that can result in the abnormal formation of hemoglobin. Often, there is mild to severe anemia (low red blood cells) amongst. Anemia can result in feeling tired and having pale skin. There may also be bone problems, an enlarged spleen, yellowish skin, dark urine, and among children slow growth.
