The military will be getting a dedicated Orthodox Cathedral in the near future as Russia is intending to do one in Moscow.
According to the report of RT.com, the Orthodox Cathedral will be built in Patriot Park, a military theme park in the city. Some Russians have already said that the cathedral looks like a castle from the hit HBO series 'Game of Thrones' or a Buk missile system.
On Tuesday, Russia's defense minister Sergey Shoigu said
'I would like us to make it a people's cathedral and the main cathedral for the Russian armed forces'. He also said that the Cathedral will be finished by the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in 2020.
The cathedral will be 95 metres high at its apex, making it the third largest cathedral in the country following St Isaac's Cathedral in St Petersburg at 101 metres and the Transfiguration Cathedral in Khabarovsk at 96 metres.
The new cathedral's website says: ' The main temple of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is being built to unite all Orthodox believers' and will 'symbolize the spirituality of the Russian army raising the sword only to protect its Motherland'.
The four chapels in the Cathedral will be dedicated patrons of each wing of the armed forces - St Elijah for the air force, St Andrew for the navy, St Alexander Nevsky for the army and St Barbara the Great Martyr for the strategic missile forces.
It will also feature a multimedia exhibition and museum with interactive historical reconstructions of famous battles.
It is said that the new Cathedral is a sign of prosperity for the Russian Orthodox Church since President Vladimir Putin returned to power. Several churches and monasteries have been built in Moscow and in other areas of the country.
This progress now pales in contrast during the communist period since clergy and believers were harassed and executed. Between 1917 and 1935, 95,000 Orthodox priests were executed. Sadly, the state did not protect the religion since they discouraged believers.
