On Tuesday, China and the United States restarted talks to settle the trade dispute between the two countries, creating a roadmap for the next stage.

The resumption of talks began with a telephone call between Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. This followed the agreed truce between the two countries after US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met during the G20 Summit on December 1. It delayed the planned January 1 US Tariff increase that would have meant a 25% tariff imposed to $200 billion worth of Chinese Goods.

According to the statement released on Tuesday, the Chinese commerce ministry confirmed that the phone call had indeed taken place between Liu, Mnuchin and Lighthizer on Tuesday morning, Beijing time.

"Both sides exchange views on putting into effect the consensus reached by the two countries' leaders at their meeting, and pushing forward the timetable and roadmap for the next change of economic and trade consultations work," the statement said.

The US also confirmed the talks but did not elaborate what was discussed.
