Before the start of the New Year, Jackie Chan's action comedy film titled "Rairoad Tigers" topped the China's box office charts. It has reportedly ranked $40.1 million which totaled to $71.4 million during its 10-day run.

According to Artisan Gateway, Zhang Yimou's "Great Wall" comes in the second place with $18.6 million in which it totaled to $148.9 million. The third place was occupied by the domestic comedy romance film titled "Some Like It Hot" staring Xiao Shenyang and Yan Ni. On the fourth place was the Alibaba Picture's "See You Tomorrow" and the fifth place was occupied by Cross Creek Picture's "Hacksaw Ridge."

State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television said that China grossed 45.7 billion yuan or approximately $6.5 billion which is an increase of 3.73 percent since 2015.

Reports claim that the 2016's China's highest grossing film was Stephen Chow's :The Mermaid" which earned $527 million, followed by "Zootopia" with $236 million. "Warcraft" "Captain America:Civil War" and "The Monkey King 2" were added on the list.

"The slump [in China box office growth] implies that the quality of domestic films is not good enough," said Li Xun, a research fellow at the China Film Art Research Center.

"The fast growth of 2015 was abnormal, [but so] is 2016's slow growth," Li added. "Box office growth should be kept at a steady and sustainable pace, and that can only be achieved by improving the films' quality."

Because of the sudden increase of more high-profile films, experts predicts that on 2017, China's box office will grow 20 percent to 30 percent.
