The Misconception of Being a Pastor’s Child

As the bible verse goes, "Judge not, that ye be not judged." Matthew 7:1

Nowadays or even in previous years, there has been a lot of misconception surrounding PK's or Pastor's kids. A lot of people see them in a different way, expecting different things from them.

However, people, especially the church members, have yet to realize that these PKs are also church members.

"They also bleed red, they get hurt and they get judged easily"

It is often expected by the public that a Pastor's kid is more prim, polite, kind, caring, godly than others and the list goes on and on. For PKs, this expectation is a bit tiring.

Who wants to be watched 24/7?

However, the negative notion about PKs are wrong as well. Very wrong.

PKs are people too, they are not perfect. They do things that are sometimes perceived as "not worthy" and most of them are teenagers who have no choice but to follow the "church-rules" because they are born into it. Being a Pastor's Kid and being in the ministry forces them to adjust to people, to church members, and do as they are told. People always use the reason that they are PKs so they should act like one

But what if they got angry? Don't they have the freedom to feel? to love? to experience other things?

For example, the Pastor in our church has three children, a 23-year-old female, a 21-year-old male and a 17-year old girl. His three children are often subject to criticism and bad judgment so the eldest daughter started to build up a wall so high that everyone gets so intimidated by her. Her attitude won't doesnt exempt anyone, the way she acts infront of you will determine how much respect you have from her.

She will be very civil, polite and pleasing, she is good with church members, good with the church kids, treats them equally, but better not get into her bad side or you will not like it.

What happened to her before is the cause as to why she is acting as such now.

The church members were so hard on her, she sees them as nothing but merely church members and not as brothers and sisters and it breaks her heart that they don't see eye to eye.

Pastor's kids are people too. The maturity of our Christian life differs from one person to another.

The Lord Jesus Christ doesn't want us to judge people or to only see the bad in them.  It also applies to other Christians not just to Pastor's Kids.

God wants us to see though that weakness. Why are they rebelling? Maybe the reason they are doing that is just like the eldest daughter of my Pastor.  She decided to be like that because all her life was focused on pleasing others, forgiving them whenever they misjudge her and forgiving them even when they talk back to their family.

Everything has been rotating to the word 'forgive', she got so fed up to adjusting that she doesn't care anymore.

But as she grows in her Christian life, I see the changes that God does to her. She is still the stern 23-year old who will intimidate you vastly but she still has a heart of gold. No matter how much she pushes people away from her life, God does something that makes them come back to her.

I remember our Pastor telling in his sermon one Sunday morning that Pastor's Kids are people too, they are also fellow church members. They commit mistakes, try bad things fall into temptation but if they have God's love in them -  the gift of eternal life - and if they are saved, the Holy Spirit will convict them for their wrong doings.

God is a God of second chances.  We don't deserve anything from Him but He died for us.  And the funny thing is, we can't see through that bad judgement.

Let us not be stereotypical because a pastor's family is often subject to criticism and temptations. The best we can do is to pray for them because they are always praying for us.

A Pastor actually spends more time with and for us than with his children so we don't have any right to judge them because only God can do that.

We too, do things that are not pleasing to God.  We sometimes secretly watch films that are not godly, wear clothes that are so revealing that it contradicts everything in the Bible. We act like we are not Christians, sometimes we curse and we stray from God's word.

We are no different from those pastor's kids, they are members too. They are human too. They are not god or any mythical being that cannot sin.

We are born sinners. God died for us to be saved so don't act so clean, we are unclean. We are bad creatures which doesn't deserve anything so we don't have any right to judge other people because they are acting "differently."

We should ask ourselves, "what's the point of only seeing the bad things?" Am I just jealous because even if that person's father is a pastor, that person still does things that are liberating?

I am not saying this to compromise things, sinning is bad and worldly things are worst; but, the flesh is weak and we are in the flesh.

They have been born into the ministry and have not any choice but to serve so of course they will feel burn out too sometimes.

The best we can to is not to judge but to love.

Love is the answer, stop the hate and start spreading love, who knows, you might get to know your Pastor's kid better and you'll be shocked on how similar you are:

Let us keep in mind that:

1.        They are not perfect

2.       They are human too

3.       They are always subject to criticism

4.       They struggle a lot because the church members and environment can be stressful too

5.       Sin exempts no one

6.       They are always the target of Satan because they are serving God

7.       They are also children of God like you, they are your brothers/sisters.

To conclude this article, a pastor's kid is not perfect. They make mistakes like any other person. Always remember that God wants us to see through that negativity, the more that person is struggling in his/her Christian life, the more we should pray for them.

Let us be the ambassadors of goodwill. Let us be kind church members and if you are a Pastor's kid, I know you can relate. However, it won't get easier if you run away from God's will.

God made us unique individuals so we can make each other shine. Let us always see the good in people because Jesus loves us the way we are, no matter what shape, what form, how good or how bad we are.
