On Saturday, the Chinese police announced that they have closed down 1,100 social media accounts and 31 websites throughout the year for unlawful activities.

According to Xinhua, which cited reports from the Ministry of Public Security, the police said that some social media accounts found in WeChat and Weibo fabricated accusations against companies and individuals.

These accounts also posted negative information and demanded ransom for their removal.

Online censorship in China has been tightened in recent years as new legislation have been introduced to restrict and monitor media sites and campaigns to remove unacceptable content.

The authorities have closed down social media accounts that ranged from posting lewd photos to articles which are politically incorrect.

Last month, at least 9,800 social media sites were closed down as they have been deemed posting sensational or politically harmful content.

Xinhua also reported that the police have investigated 28 cases involving paid online trolls or ghostwriters and so far, at least 67 suspects have been arrested.
