The National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA marked its 75th anniversary with films and storytelling, prayers and publications, and dialogue on challenges and diversity, in the past, present, and future.
World Council of Churches (WCC) president from North America, Rev. Dr Angelique Walker Smith, offered a report about the WCC to the board of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA as they conducted business and elected new leaders. Walker Smith, who received a Presidential Award from the council, also served as part of a panel discussing ecumenical trends.
The celebration included a book release, "Nicaea: The Council and Creed that Defined Christianity," edited by Don Thorsen, and coming from the Faith and Order table of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA.
The book invites readers to rediscover the depth and vitality of the creed that continues to shape the heart of Christian belief.
"Today, while not all Christians value the Nicene Creed the same way, it remains a foundation for teaching and proclaiming biblical Christianity," notes the introduction. "This book offers fresh perspectives on how this ancient confession of faith inspires unity, enriches worship, and equips Christians to respond to modern challenges."
In addition to the new Nicaea book, the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA launched a commemorative Bible.
Participants in the anniversary celebration visited the Museum of African American History.
WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay extended greetings for the special anniversary. "You have graced the worldwide ecumenical movement with dedicated staff, theological enrichment, generous support, and collaborative programming," he said.
