The Lord chooses the foolish things in the world to shame the wise, the weak to shame the strong, and everything else that the world would consider to be useless. This is one way in which God chooses people. He doesn't choose the best in the sight of people; He chooses an ordinary, crazy person and makes Him the best.
When I say crazy, don't get me wrong. I mean it in a sincerely good way. By definition, crazy could either mean extremely enthusiastic, foolish or appear absurdly out of place. In other words, crazy means out of the ordinary. Crazy people don't always end up in a mental institution, sometimes they end up doing amazing, supernatural and awesome things for God. So, here's a list of three ordinary people in the Bible whom God used mightily.
1. NOAH
The name of Noah first appears in the Bible in Genesis chapter 5. In his time, the earth was so corrupt that God regretted that He had made man on earth (Gen 6:5-6). In a place where there is extreme wickedness, undoubtedly, it wouldn't be easy for a single man to remain faithful and righteous before God. But Noah was.
One day, the Lord tells Noah to build an ark. Put yourself in Noah's shoes for a minute and picture this: God tells you to build a giant boat made from a specific type of wood and to cover it with tar inside and out to make it waterproof and gather every animal on the face of the earth by twos and go inside the ark because a great flood was coming.
Who do you think was going to help Noah cut all the wood and build the ark? Who was going to get all the animals? It was a colossal task for a single human being. But then he had three sons, so we can expect them to have helped, but still, the task was humongous and everyone else around Noah at that time did not believe him. Moreover, Bible scholars have said that the people in that time had never experienced rain, but there the Lord was speaking of rain, something that had never occurred to them before. It was a crazy idea, but how did Noah respond to the Lord? He took action.
As a result, Noah got his entire family saved, preserving the future generations of humanity. If Noah died in the flood along with everyone else, the entire human race would be extinct thousands of years ago and you and I would not exist today. Noah's crazy faith preserved mankind.
2. MOSES
As the writer of the first five books of the Bible and whose life Disney's The Prince of Egypt was featured on, Moses has got to be one of the mightiest men of God since creation. The book of Exodus up to Deuteronomy records everything that God was able to do through him: the 10 plagues in Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, the earth opening up to swallow the people who rebelled against God, the water out of the rock, the manna from heaven, the snakes, the quails, and many more.
God tells him, "Turn the water into blood," and he does it. If you were Moses, how would you respond to something like that? Moreover, how would you respond if the Lord told you to part the sea? It takes a bit of crazy faith to do something like that.
3. SHAMGAR
Here's a Bible character you probably don't know about. Only one verse is written about him that says, "After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel (Judges 3:31)."
In the time of the Judges, the Lord used people like Shamgar to save Israel whenever the Israelites cried out to Him for help. It was a time when the people followed God on and off so faith wasn't a common denominator among the people.
The people during the time of Shamgar were under such great oppression that they couldn't have decent weapons, thus the oxgoad, a wooden tool that looked similar to a spear which was used to spur oxen as they pulled a plow or cart; and alone, Shamgar killed 600 Philistines with it. It kind of not seems like much, but consider, the Philistines had weaponry. They had shields and swords, but the 600 of them were killed by a lone man with a farming tool. I believe that Shamgar was crazy enough to believe that God could use him for deliverance even if what he had was a stick. Then again, Moses, too, used a stick to perform miracles, he had a staff.
