According to a recently released study, China is the largest single contributor of the PM2.5 particles, which produce cardiovascular and respiratory illness, over Taiwanese cities.

Taiwan's Environmental Protection Administration Lance Wu, professor in the Department of Information Management at Chang Jung Christian University, director of digital content creation at the National Space Organization, and former researcher at the Bell Labs Satellite Communications Department, provided data claiming that the biggest source of the haze comes not from the country's automobiles, road dust or manufacturing sector, instead it was blown from across the strait.

According to Taiwan News, the PM2.5 coming from overseas consumed more than one-third of the whole air percentage in Taiwan.

According to the news media outlet, the vast "overseas" air pollution comes from China which lies upwind of Taiwan. It can be recalled that around late 2017, northern Taiwan was hit with severe air pollution that authorities blamed from China.

However, it is not enough to say that Taiwan does not have any air pollution problems of its own. In particular, the southern Taiwan's air quality has grown noticeably worse in recent years, especially in Kaohsiung city.
