Vanity is defined as excessive admiration or pride of one's own achievements and appearance. While the Bible also included vanity but the usage describes vanity as having no ultimate meaning, it is a concept shared with some philosophies.

Vanity as a despair of human life's value destroys confidence in abilities, possessions and to one's self.

If faith is allowed to focus on God, true meaning and joy can be found. Learn more from the Bible verses below about vanity:

Ecclesiastes 2:11

"Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun."

Ecclesiastes 2:1

"I said to myself, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good." But that also proved to be meaningless."

Ecclesiastes 2:15

"Then I said to myself, "The fate of the fool will overtake me also. What then do I gain by being wise?" I said to myself, "This too is meaningless."

Ecclesiastes 5:10

"Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless."

Ecclesiastes 6:2

"God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them, and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil."

Psalm 119:37

"Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word."

Romans 12:2

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will."

1 Samuel 16:7

"But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."
