We need the wisdom to make friends. Christians are no exception. When we are at the infancy of our spiritual lives, we need discernment and prayers to avoid deception from our future friends. We can also be consecrated to avoid making bad friends that lead us towards paths that displease God.
Therefore, Christians need the right values for friendship. Good friends should be people who can give us care, ears, and encouragement in both good and bad times. We ourselves should also be other people’s loyal friends.
There are many verses in the Bible that teach us how to make friends. Below are ten Bible verses to help us wisely make friends:
Proverbs 18:24 One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 20:19 A gossip betrays a confidence;
so avoid anyone who talks too much.
Proverbs 22:24 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person,
do not associate with one easily angered.
1 Corinthians 5:10 ...Not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Proverbs 29:3 A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father,
but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
Proverbs 24:21 Fear the Lord and the king, my son,
and do not join with rebellious officials.
Proverbs 27:8-9 Like a bird that flees its nest
is anyone who flees from home.
Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart,
and the pleasantness of a friend
springs from their heartfelt advice.
2 Timothy 2:21-22 Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Proverbs 27:6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted,
but an enemy multiplies kisses.
