When I was younger, I used to believe that heaven is for everyone, regardless of their faith. I used to think that when people die, heaven is where they would go to automatically. There were no worries on my side. I thought that I could do whatever I wanted to and still end up on the golden streets of eternity.
This was what I believed in even though I was very well aware that there's also such a place called hell.
I thought that even though I lived like I'm on a one way ticket to the lake of fire, I'd still end up in heaven.
That was a lie, of course. I had believed a lie.
Satan has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies says John 8:44.
Heaven is real.
Hell is real.
If my old belief was a lie, then what is the truth?
The truth is that not everyone will make it to heaven except those who choose to. I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God says John 3:3, which means that God is giving us the power to decide. When Jesus said, unless you are born again, he is giving us both a choice to enter Heaven and a warning if we stay out.
Contrary to popular belief, being born again is not joining a religion. It has nothing to do with church denominations. A person can be born again no matter what their religion is.
To be born again is to experience a rebirth in the human spirit. It is personal. "So don't be surprised when I say, 'You must be born again.'" Said Jesus. "The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit (John 3:7-8)."
Our human bodies do not need to be delivered twice. But, although we live physically until we enter the Kingdom of God, our spirits remain dead.
We were born spiritually dead which is why Jesus came to save us because dead spirits are hell bound by biblical principle. That's just the way it is.
He is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25), and part of his resurrecting job is to give life to our dead spirits that we may be born again. This is also called salvation.
John 3:16
For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
So you see, it has nothing to do with religion.
It does, however, have everything to do with faith.
Romans 10:9-10 says that, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. This is not only the key to being born again and having our spirits resurrected from the dead, it is also the entry pass to heaven. If you haven't done so already and you want to get there one day, all you have to do is what this verse says. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. Believing, in another word, is faith.
So, who really gets to heaven?
Those who believe and follow Jesus.
Who doesn't get to heaven?
Those who don't believe and don't follow Jesus.
Salvation is an ongoing process. This is the starting line of a long race and everyday is a choice. The journey to heaven is not impossible. God is able to lead us there if we follow Him; and there will be bumps in the road. I've already had numerous bumps. I've had my bruises, but every single day I choose to follow Jesus because I have made it my goal to get to heaven one day. There are sacrifices in following Him, but every single one of them is worth it.
Believing in Jesus is the doorway to heaven, following him through obedience is the road that we have to travel until the day comes that we reach the gates of heaven.
Philippians 3:12-14
I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Amen.
