On Febuary 23, Mr. Michael Moller, Director-General of United Nations Office at Geneva, met up with the representatives of social organizations at the Palace of Nations in Geneva, which includes Amity Foundation. The Chairman of Amity International Liaison Office in Geneva, Ms. Xie Ying, attended the meeting in behalf of the Foundation.
The Amity Foundation was granted special consultative status by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations in August 2014.
As a civil servant with over 35 years of experience as an international civil servant in the UN, Moller started work in Geneva UNOG Office in 2013.
As we all know, the three main themes of the United Nations are peace, rights and people's livelihood and Geneva is famous for its work for world peace as a neutral nation. Moller highlighted the relationship between development and peace, using the word "prevention" as a key word, and responded to the participants' questions about development, peace and human rights.
He hopes that social organizations explore preventive, integrated, innovative, strategic and systematic programs to address the root causes of conflict and disaster within the framework of sustainable development and actively build new partnerships cross sectors. He also said that abilities, technology and experience are not enough to make a global impact and stressed that convergence of doers, knowledge and resources are highly needed.
The meeting brought in a large audience and the number of representatives from social organizations being part of the United Nations Economic and Social Council increased by 10% over last year.
Attendees actively joined the discussions. Some put forward ideas on how to balance the security and the values of transparency in Geneva, since the Director-General proposed to strengthen the security of the Palace of Nations. Some also brought up the topic of environment protection, claiming that animals also have right to survival and development. Mr. Moller also responded to questions and led the discussion on the issues of concern.
