Seoul to Host EASSSR 7th Meeting on Religion and Citizenship in Asia

The East Asian Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (EASSSR) will host its seventh annual conference from July 18 to 20, 2025, at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea.

The conference will explore the theme "Religion and Citizenship in the Asian Context: Theory, Practice, and Trends," focusing on the interplay between religious practices and concepts of citizenship within Asian societies, according to EASSSR official website.

Scholars are invited to submit paper abstracts addressing topics such as the historical influences of religion on citizenship in East Asia, secularism and religious practices, religion and political systems, religious freedom and state control, and the impact of religion on human rights, including LGBTQ+ rights. The deadline for abstract submissions is March 31, 2025, with notifications of acceptance to be sent by the end of April.

Professor Prasenjit Duara, Oscar Tang professor of East Asian Studies at Duke University, will give the keynote speech at the conference. An optional one-day tour of a religious site is scheduled for July 20, 2025.
