Shanghai Tushan Bay Museum was built on the original site of the Tushan Bay Orphanage which generated Tushan Bay culture. It was established by the Catholic Church in Xujiahui, which also founded a handicraft factory, that produced paintings, sculptures, prints, woodcuts, and works of metal. With many crafts originated there, Tushan Bay is also known as “the cradle of Chinese Western painting”, where famous painters such as  Ren Bonian, Liu Haisu, and Xu Beihong gave lessons.

The museum was opened on "Museum Day" in June 2010, with the "Chinese Archway" as the treasure of the museum, displaying a historical picture of cultural and artistic exchanges between China and the West involving rich objects and historical materials.
