Guangdong Union Theological Seminary conducted Advent candle lighting to commemorate the birth of Christ.

On December 4, Rev. Bi Sheng lit the purple candle of the first week, which symbolizes repentance, said the seminary. Subsequently, four students read the lectionary of this week, leading the attendees to meditate on the grace of Jesus Christ.

At the lighting liturgy, a student representative introduced the meaning of Advent, which is to mark and celebrate the incarnation of Jesus, the Son of God, into this world and to wait for his second coming. During this event, the spiritual practices are mainly prayers and meditations.

To encourage students’ enthusiasm for reading the lectionary every day, the student union initiated a check-in event during the 2023 Advent.

The chapel of the seminary is scheduled to light candles representing repentance, alertness, preparation, and joy on the four Sundays of 2023 Advent from December 3 to December 24. The white candle symbolizing Christ’s holiness and presence will be lit on Christmas Eve. Every student will have the chance to trim and guard the Advent candles when they are burning.
