Chinese Government to Increase Efforts Against Leprosy

The Chinese government is increasing its efforts to fight leprosy according to the recent announcement of President Xi Jinping, who pledged that the country will increase its efforts to eliminate leprosy in the country.

In his congratulatory note speech for the 19th International Leprosy Congress held on Monday which was read by Vice President Li Yuanchao who attended in his behalf, Xi said that China would continue to support other countries to improve development and innovation for leprology and contribute to the elimination of leprosy worldwide. He also adds that leprosy continues to be a difficult problem for the world and it is necessary for all countries to cooperate against this problem.

The 19th International Leprosy Congress is hosted by the Chinese Leprosy Association and themed "Unfinished Business: stopping transmission, preventing disability, promoting inclusion", which Xi cites to be a positive actor in assisting the fight against leprosy.

At least 1,300 experts and representatives from 100 countries attended the conference this year, including China, India, Brazil and the United States. Representatives from both international organizations and non-governmental organizations attended the conference.
