A symposium on Christianity and medical and health services in modern China was held at Shanghai University on Oct. 25, 2017. More than 50 scholars and professors attended it.
Prof. Connie Shemo from Plattsburgh State University made a keynote speech entitled "Did Missionaries Bring 'Modern' Medicine to China?"
The participants, including non-Christian, Christian and Catholic scholars, published 35 related papers in six sessions that also had Q&A segments. The speeches were on missionaries' spirituality, spiritual care in health services, medical education, medical ethics, architectural design, Chinese and western medicine, hospital history, medical mission, pharmaceutical and medical fields, and medical treatment during World War II.
The papers included "The Spiritual Life of the Medical Missionary William Lockhart", "A Review of the Christian leprosarium in Teng County, Shandong", "An Analysis of the Spiritual Care in Christian Medical Services", and "The Medical Education of Church Universities and the Medical Ethics Construction in Modern China".
Dr. Li Ling, director of the Christianity and China Research Center located in Los Angeles, California, and managing chief of the academic periodical Research for Christianity in China, stated that the symposium functioned as a platform for young scholars although no renowned scholars joined in it.
