On April 27, at least 5,500 coins perceived to be 200 years old have been located during the renovation of the Rongpo Monastery in Dingri County, Tibet.
According to the head of the Dingri County Wang Kun, the round coins which weigh 26.6 kg with floral patterns may likely come from the 18th century when the Ganden Phodrang regime was ruling Tibet in the period.
Coinage or mintage in Tibet, according to the People's Bank of China, started in 1792 with the assistance of Chinese central government's minister to Tibet assisted in the creation of these coins for the region.
