Meditation on Holy Monday: The Lord Showed Wisdom in the Face of Humiliation

Luke 22:63-71 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" And they said many other insulting things to him.

At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. "If you are the Messiah," they said, "tell us."

Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."

They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?"

He replied, "You say that I am."

Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."

Observation:

  • How did the chief priests, teachers of the law and the Pharisees humiliate Jesus?

They mocked and beat him. "They blindfolded him and demanded, 'Prophesy! Who hit you?' And they said many other insulting things to him." " 'If you are the Messiah,' they said, 'tell us.'"

When Jesus answered, they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? "

  • What was Jesus' response?

He answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."

Explanation and application:

1. After Jesus was arrested, many people insulted, abused and questioned him, who denied him and treated as a heinous criminal. It was unimaginable beyond comprehension. Yesterday, Jesus was teaching the people in the holy temple and countless people heard his sermons. In that same evening, he ate the Passover meal with the disciples. However, he became a prisoner overnight. Normally, priests and the teachers of the law have no power to arrest a man or judge a criminal. Faced with different voices, the servants of God's temple killed the prophets and now killed Jesus.

2. Knowing their hypocrisy and hearts, Jesus responded to them with wisdom. They arrested him because there was no way for them to reply to Jesus and opted to shut him up by killing him. So Jesus said, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."

It can be seen that your friend will protect and support you without being given any explanation. On the contrary, those who are not your friends and disagree with you do not, need your excuse. If they want any explanation, they require more evidences against you to put you to shame.
