Picture this scenario: you're a Christian and when you got saved, you eagerly expected the blessings of God to start pouring in. It's right to expect them because they're there, but for some reason, you're not being blessed. You expected God Who Provides to get you out of debt but you're way deep in your financial trouble and they keep on stacking even more. You expected God Who Heals to get rid of a physical pain that's been troubling you for a long time, but the pain just gets worse with no sign of healing. You know, when I got saved, I had similar expectations, only to find out that there's something that I've been doing that blocks the blessings.
The blessings intended for us are all lined up the moment we receive Christ. They're at the door but the door's locked so they can't get inside. You shout, "Come in!" from the inside, but you're not aware that the entry points are all shut in.
What's the problem then? Simple. If you're experiencing the frustrations of unsatisfied expectations from God, then the problem may very well be your own mouth. This is just one among a couple of other possibilities, but we'll focus on the mouth.
There's a verse in the book of Numbers that I love a lot and fear a lot at the same time. It's found in Chapter 14 and the 28th verse.
So tell them, "As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say."
What this passage is saying is that what you say is what will happen. So it's very likely that what you say about your life is what blocks the blessings. Such statement is called a 'self-imposed curse.'
Here's an example:
God: My plans are to prosper you and not to harm you.
You: I'm never getting out of this debt.
You: I guess I'll always be poor.
You: Nothing is working out for me.
You: God probably doesn't want to bless me.
Every word you say that contradicts the promises of God pile up at the doorway of your blessing so that the blessing stays out. Even if God wants to prosper you but you keep on negating the Word, it's not going to happen. What you do is you curse yourself. See, the Word of God can't be broken. If God says that He will do to you the very things He hear you say, that's exactly what's going to happen.
Proverbs 21:23 says that, "Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity." The tongue, as small as is it, is more powerful that our arms and legs. Our limbs can take us to a physical location but the tongue can drive the course of our entire lives.
Again in the book of Proverbs, this principle is proven true by these words, "From the fruit of their mouth a person's stomach is filled; with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied. The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit (Prov. 18:20-21)."
Good news though! There's a way out. Do these, and see your life change its course.
1. Repent from speaking negative words that bring a curse on your life. Ask God for forgiveness and make it a point to change your language.
2. Break every curse. For example, "I break every self-imposed curse I've said againts myself and I set myself free from (name your problem). I break the curse of (name it) on my life, in Jesus' name."
3. Speak the blessings of the Lord. Remember every promise that He gave you and declare them. Overcome the bad with the good so replace the negative words with the Word of God.
4. Thank the Lord, praise Him with all your heart, and worship Him in Spirit and in truth.
5. Repeat if necessary.
I've seen this happen in my life. In my early walk with the Lord, I didn't know that I've been cursing myself all along. But when I learned this truth, I applied it right away and my life turned around. Since then, I've been careful with my words, holding my tongue when I don't feel good, and speaking blessings and positive words in normal days. Well, even in bad days, I do my best to declare the promises of God. Death and life are in the power of tongue. Since I have the choice and it depends on me, I train myself to always, always choose life. You can, too. God wants to bless you.
