This photo collection offers a close look at Dongxinxiang Church—widely regarded as the first Christian church in Xi'an, Shaanxi. From its historic arched entrance and century-old sanctuary to its stained-glass windows, Ten Commandments plaques, and distinctive cross-topped roofline, the images highlight the enduring beauty and spiritual heritage of this landmark church in the heart of the ancient city.
Located at No. 26 Dongxinxiang in Xi'an's Beilin District, Dongxinxiang Church was founded by the missionaries from the British Baptist Missionary Society and completed in 1909 as the city's earliest Christian church. Built on a Latin-cross plan with a vaulted wooden roof and a column-free interior, the main entrance features an arched façade with bronze lettering. The church remained one of four authorized worship sites during the 1958 period, underwent major renovation in 1984 to accommodate about 600 worshippers, and added an annex with modern facilities in 2004. In 1996, it hosted German President Roman Herzog during his visit to Xi'an.
