Jerry Hwang, associate professor of theology at Trinity Christian College in Illinois (USA) and also an affiliated researcher at Singapore Bible College, has been named the new executive editor of the Evangelical Review of Theology (ERT), the WEA’s theology journal.

Since becoming open-access in 2020, ERT has developed a mailing list of nearly 3,000 and become one of the most frequently visited pages on the WEA website. ERT addresses issues of contemporary concern to the global body of Christ. It aims to present well-researched information and perspectives in a style suitable for general readers.

Hwang replaces Bruce Barron, who held the position for seven years and presided over ERT’s revitalization as an open-access journal. Barron will continue to serve as copy editor.

“As a Chinese-American who has ministered in several Majority World countries, I enjoy building bridges, crossing boundaries, and learning from Christians in other places,” Hwang stated. “I hope to help in bringing Majority World Christian scholarship to the attention of the rest of the world—as well as the reverse.”

Hwang is author of Contextualization and the Old Testament: Between Asian and Western Perspectives and editor of Exploring the Old Testament in Asia: Evangelical Perspectives. Both works were published by Langham in conjunction with the Asia Theological Association in 2022.

Hwang has considerable experience in global theological education. His classes at Singapore Bible College reached students from 20 nationalities, and Hwang functions in four languages: English, French, Spanish, and Chinese.

“We are excited to have Jerry join us in this role,” said Theresa Lua, the WEA’s director of global theology. “His vast knowledge and credibility in the evangelical theological world will help ERT continue to grow in quality and relevance.”

Francis Samdao, who teaches at Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary, will continue as assistant editor.
