Never let diseases or illnesses pull you down. That is what people at the 13th Shanghai Suzhou Creek Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament held on June 10 saw when a team comprising of 12 cancer survivors took part in the event.

Funded by Shanghai Agape Foundation and Hu Dong Church, the team consisted a former lung-cancer patient (77 years old) and a breast cancer survivor who had several operations to stop the disease, according to the WeChat site of the church in Shanghai. Their team's average ages exceeds 60 years old.

They won seventh place in the 200 meter straight course against professional, domestic and overseas youth teams in the open category.

"They show the spirit that the cancer patients in Shanghai smile to hardships and strive toughly through deeds, setting an example of survivors for the people with cancer in the society." said a staff member of the Shanghai church.

Shanghai Agape Foundation, founded in February 2015, was initiated by the church in Shanghai and based inside Shanghai CCC&TSPM. It supports senior work, people with financial difficulty and their families, as well as poverty-stricken students with funding. The foundation also provides assistance in equipment construction regarding culture, education and medical health in poor districts and participates in both domestic and overseas cultural exchange and cooperation programs.
