On Nov 1, 2016, the Amity Foundation introduces the Chinese NGOs environment, plus their motivation and development of going globally at its international office in Geneva. Twenty-two representatives from sixteen international institutions and NGOs attend the meeting.
Professor Jia Xijin from Tsinghua University shares the history, classification rule and legislation and policy trends of Chinese NGOs. She also analyzes the charity law and the administrative law on overseas NGOs within the territory of China.
Xie Ying, executive director of Amity's international office, speaks of the challenges Amity faces under the new circumstance. She claims that the foundation has achieved strategic transformation from high dependence on overseas funds to domestic donations.
But the challenge lies in how to stick to the principles of focusing on community development and people's capacity construction when China prefers traditional charity such as one-to-one aid and disease aid. Advocacy is needed to guide donation motives from sympathy to empathy, guide people from the perceptual cognition of problems to rational thought about roots of problems and even to influence the country to develop small towns and rural communities.
In July 2015, the Amity Foundation's Africa office was inaugurated and established in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. On March 9, 2016, the International office of the Amity Foundation in Geneva held the opening service. The foundation has become a pioneer going abroad for Chinese NGOs.
