The Amity Foundation will hold a half marathon national championship for the female in Nanjing, claiming to donate all the application fees and the sales of the charity bazaar to support urban poor migrant children. Amity reports that its running team will allow 300 people, who should be women or mothers and sons above 12 years old, to participate in the race.
The foundation wants to forge a reading nook with the area of 1 m2 in the homes of poor migrant children through the activity. Since 2009, it has cooperated with the Nanjing Community Development Center for Facilitators to promote the project, providing free hardware facilities, collecting books and training librarians for the group.
The Nanjing Development Center said in its official blog that the majority of migrant children live in cramped apartments in the edge of urban areas, studying in shabby environments. Meanwhile, their parents busy toiling in work, don't have time to be with them on their studies or are incapable to tutoring them due to their limited education.
A national census data collected in 2010 shows that most of the children are inhabiting either in urban villages, villages on both the outskirts and the downtown segments of major Chinese cities. The economic conditions, public facilities and education resources there fall far behind those in the downtown areas. Their housing area mainly ranges from 30 to 60 m2 and 19.26% of them have a living space of 10 to 30 m2. 71.8% of the families live in rented apartments and 55.59% of migrant children don't have their own study rooms.
