Beijing Chongwenmen Church, in partnership with a local community, initiated a project helping the elderly on September 15, 2017.
Residents above 80 in the community can take some free vegetables provided by the church every Friday. All the fresh vegetables are donated by the church members. Vegetables are sent by the community committee or the residential property company to the homes of elderly people who cannot go out.
The elderly residents received their first portions on the day of the ceremony. Mrs. An, who lives in a hutong, a type of narrow street or alley in Beijing, got a serving of vegetables at home. She said with excitement, "Having the 'soothing vegetables', I needn't worry about the inconvenience of buying vegetables after the hutong is rearranged! Thank the community and Chongwenmen Church!"
As a response to a document promoting religious charity events released by the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the church is active in carrying out social service in aiding the elderly, orphaned, poor, and financially disadvantaged students.
