New efforts are now on the way to protect China's historical heritage as the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development announced on Monday that each city in the country is now expected to identify all of their historical districts and buildings within a five year period in order to protect these areas.

According to the ministry's historic and cultural protection division director Fu Shuang, these historic cities, districts and buildings illustrate China's history and showcase how the country has grown not just in a political and economic way, but also in terms of its social development, culture and technology. This announcement was made in a forum in Jiangsu Province focusing on historic town protection.

At the present time, China has 252 towns and 276 villages cited as historic and cultural districts and are now under a special state protection to foster its conservation.
