In January 2025, the book Latin in China: A Special Story in the Encounter Bewteen China and the West, written by Leopold Leeb, was published.
According to Chinese Christian Studies, senior Latin scholar Leopold Leeb traces the history of the spread and reception of Latin in China, forming a history of Sino-Western cultural exchange with Latin as the medium.
The website claims that Leeb, an Austrian who has taught Latin and ancient Greek for decades, has thoroughly researched Latin inscriptions, Latin publications, Latin schools and libraries in China, Latin songs and prayers that have circulated in China, as well as historical figures and early students who studied Latin in China, along with the new developments of Latin in China in the 21st century.
Containing eleven chapters in chronological order, the newly-published book records the cultural exchange involving Latin language before the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368), the situation of Latin in China during the Yuan dynasty, and the translations of Latin works by Chinese and foreign scholars from Ming-Qing transition (1618–1683) to the early 20th centuray.
