Two of the highest-ranking Christian leaders in China were elected as members of the Standing Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
Rev. Xu Xiaohong, chairman of the National Committee of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM), and Rev. Wu Wei, president of the China Christian Council (CCC), were promoted from committee members to standing committee members on March 10 during the third plenary meeting of the first session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, which selected the chairman, vice chairman, secretary general, and standing members in the Great Hall of the People, said CCC&TSPM.
Xu said, "From a committee member to a standing committee member, I feel that the responsibility is greater, the burden is heavier, and the requirements are higher. We must keep in mind General Secretary Xi Jinping's requirements of 'understanding the political consultation, being good at negotiating and discussing politics, observing discipline, respecting rules, emphasizing good conduct,' and diligently performing our duties. As a Christian CPPCC member, I must always be a bridge between the party and believers, leading Chinese Protestant Christianity to unite more closely around the Communist Party of China. We will promote Christianity in the Chinese context in a deep and detailed way so that Christianity in our country will become a strong force of loving the country and religion in the new era."
"Political consultation is an important political system in our country," Wu said. "It is not only an honor but also a responsibility to participate in this institutionalized consultation platform that promotes democracy, participates in national affairs, and unites and cooperates. As a standing committee member, I must study harder and strive to make myself meet the requirements of understanding the Political Consultation, being good at negotiating and discussing politics, observing discipline, respecting rules, and emphasizing good conduct so as to perform my duties for the country and the people."
Rev. Xu Yulan was chosen to be a scrutineer at the 14th CPPCC National Committee's first meeting. She is a member of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, vice chairman of TSPM, and chairman of Shanghai TSPM.
