A group of 22 visually impaired persons (VIPs) ventured outside their homes to watch a Chinese film at the Amity Foundation in Jiangsu.
With the help of 28 volunteers, the VIPs arrived at Amity to watch a Chinese film named Born to Fly through barrier-free cinemas on the Youku app, according to the foundation.
After the movie ended, the participants expressed their desire to have the opportunity to visit places such as museums, theaters, and cultural attractions in the future.
During the summary of the event, Dou Fang, vice chairman of the Nanjing Blind Association, said, "Although we live in the same city, VIPs rarely have the chance to experience the beauty of the city outside their homes." She looked forward to organizing more similar activities in the future to serve more VIPs and let more people pay attention to and know the real life of people with disabilities.
According to relevant statistics, there are currently 85 million disabled individuals in China, which accounts for one in every 16 people. Among them, there are over 5 million individuals with intellectual disabilities and over 25 million with severe disabilities. Over the years, Amity has been dedicated to the field of disability assistance, initiating the project "Take Disabled Individuals to See the World" as part of its "Fish for People" program.
The program consists of three parts: accompanying vulnerable groups to see the world, sponsoring and accompanying village children in their growth, and helping people with severe illnesses and people in difficult circumstances.
