In my childhood memories, Christmas was always full of warmth and joy. At that time, Christmas was as festive as New Year.
Every Christmas, the church was adorned with vibrant decorations, establishing a festive atmosphere. Even before dawn, the chapel was already filled with people, all coming together to celebrate this special day with joy and gratitude.
The most commonly sung hymn back then was "Joyful Tidings Bring." Despite its simple melody, the song conveyed the grace brought to the world through the birth of Jesus. Even today, it continues to be sung every Christmas. Winters back then were much colder than they are now, and the church lacked heating systems, but the warmth of gratitude to the Lord burned brightly in everyone’s hearts, which was enough to resist the cold.
The congregation would begin preparations for the Christmas program several months in advance, rehearsing daily at the gathering place. Those unable to practice during the day would make time to rehearse in the evening. Their dedication was to offer the most sincere gratitude to the Lord.
In the church, members wholeheartedly presented their programs. There were solo performances where the singing might be imperfect or off-key, it was out of sincerity. During the choral performances, the voices of the congregation united, sounding like angels. At the same time, sketches brought messages of the gospel. Every Christmas, numerous non-believers would come to the church, and the congregation hoped these performances would help them understand that the Lord Jesus was born to bring salvation to the world.
After the worship service, the church would distribute simple Christmas gifts to everyone. In an era of material scarcity, even a simple gift brought great joy to the recipients. Though modest in value, the gifts carried profound meaning.
Christmas in my childhood was simple yet full of passion. Though those days are long gone, the warmth and joy will stay in my heart. I am certain that, no matter how time flies, the love of God remains.
